Michele Sfakianos's "The 411 On Life Skills" - Preparing for Hurricane Irene

"The 4-1-1 on Life Skills is the 'Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow' that you get to walk away with the tools and the knowledge to gain that something that will put yourself and your family on the pathway of an informed and powerful life!"--Michelle Sfakianos, RN, BSN

Essential Tips on:
Home & Money Management;
Personal Care & Safety;
And More!"
by Michele Sfakianos, RN, BSN

I started my review for Michele's "The 4-1-1 On Life Skills"just as Hurricane Irene began blowing up the northeast coast. As Rye Beach sandbagged it's rocky shoreline and fellow New Yorkers stocked up on rosary beads, batteries and bottled water, I skipped over Chapter One, "Cleaning Supplies: A Basic List" through Chapter Twenty-Three, "Gift Giving Ideas" to Chapter Twenty-Four, "Disaster Preparedness."

If Hurricane Irene was a test, then Michele Sfakianos's book and all information provided was timely and the answer.

Each chapter in Sfakianos's "4-1-1" is specific to its specific title, which includes names, lists of items needed to complete a task, precise numbers of amounts needed, and outlines with easy to understand detailed instructions for a reader to follow.

"Chapter Twenty-Four" begins:

"No Matter what type of disaster, storm or weather alert you have in your area, there is some preparation you can do ahead of time."

4-1-1 goes on to list types of disasters--I traced my finger down the long list from Chemical Emergencies through Earthquake *we already  had that one* to #12, Hurricane, my personal at-the-moment-impending disaster.

Following author Sfakianos's instructions, I called a friend. The list of things to do in an emergency indicates watching t.v. for news updates and broadcasts offering viewers instructions. Sfakianos goes further offering a list of items for an Emergency Supply Kit. One item mentioned in this kit was the inclusion of:

Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper--When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by  using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water.

I did not know this.

Further instructions warned against using scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

This writer did not know this, either.

4-1-1 specified "...Determine how and where to secure your boat."

I do not own a boat, but I do own a car and living in an apartment building in a city with an open parking space in an open parking lot, makes Big Blue vulnerable to falling flying and floating objects. Big Blue is my car. I substituted the Boat word for Big Blue and set about to Plan B--locating a safe high dry and protected parking garage to park my car.

Sfakianos's book, "The 4-1-1- on Life Skills" is a necessary reference book for every reader's bookshelf. It is not only for the student leaving home, it is for women, widows, widowers, the divorced--guys and gals--of all ages, and any individual seeking sound advice, useful information and tips for every day living.
